The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is an adaptation of a novel by Irish writer John Boyne. The movie was first released in United States in 2008, as a  historical-drama film. The movie starring Asa Butterfield, Jack Scanlon, David Thewlis, Vera Farming, Amber Beattie and Rupert friend was dirtied by Mark Herman and produced by David Heyman. The movie is considered as a Holocaust drama. Holocaust referring to the mass murder of genocide of approximately six million Jews during World War II, a programme of systematic state-sponsored murder by Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, throughout the German-occupied territories.

The movie tries to depict the horror of a World War II Nazi extermination camp through the eyes of two 8-year-old boys, one being the son of the camp's Nazi Commandant and the other being a Jewish inmate. There are a lot of bits of nuances in the movie, that you have to see yourself by watching the movie, thus, I would not like to spoil the movie by writing the rest of the plot.

The film have also received a good reception from movie critics and reviewers. 'The Times' refer erred as "hugely affecting film and important too" and 'The New York Times' referred to the movie as "the Holocaust trivialised, glossed over, kitsched up, commercially exploited and hijacked for a tragedy about a Nazi family". The movie have also received a number of awards from quite a few different honourable award ceremonies, like the 'Best European Film' from Premio Goya, 'Best International Film' from Irish Film and Television Award and  so on.

Perhaps, the movie might not be to everyone's taste, however, I would highly recommend this movie to movie-viewers who enjoys some emotional drama and a good child acting. If you had not much idea about that era and what happened to the children of both sides during that time,  I guess the movie will give you a good glimpse of the happenings during that time of history.

Gravity (2013)

Big science fiction films are all the rage this year (Oblivion, Elysium, Pacific Rim...) and Gravity is finally one worth watching. From the trailers I had no idea what to expect. George Clooney and Sandra Bullock floating around in space for two hours eventually became my best guess.

I hate 3D movies, they give me awful headaches and I don't see the point of them. But as soon as Gravity started, I changed my mind.

The 3D definitely adds something to the film. The opening shot of earth and space is absolutely beautiful. The film starts up fast enough. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are both out doing repairs on the spaceship when Houston warns them the Russians blew up their own satellite and accidentally destroyed every other satellite there is. Debris is coming their way and they have to get back to earth as soon as possible. Of course, from the trailers we see that debris does his them, and without a spaceship they must find another way home.

George Clooney basically plays George Clooney in a space suit (a funny self-loving character also often played by Robert Downey Jr) and Sandra Bullock plays a doctor who was trained a few months for this mission only. George gets very little screen time but Sandra shines throughout the whole film. Despite her being alone, I would say there is quite a lot of action in the film. She's alone out there and you feel you are too. The film takes you in space and it feels claustrophobic to be there. It keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Throughout the film, you see Sandra's character growing as well. Not only is she trying to get back home, but she's finding the will to do so as well.

The film is a visual masterpiece. Yes there is a lot of CGI of course (basically everything you see on screen is fake) but it never felt like it. For once, the 3D definitely adds something to the experience. You get the depth of field you need to truly experience the movie and feel as though you're right there with Sandra. She gives an absolutely stunning performance, acting to absolutely nothing, yet always being right on the spot.

If you get a chance to see Gravity in theaters, go for it, especially if you see it in 3D (even if you usually hate 3D, believe me, it's worth it.) Alfonso CuarĂ³n has outdone himself with this film, it's definitely a must see for sci-fi lovers.

World War Z

World War Z

So, since our blog is about movies we have watched. I have decided to share my experience about the movie I have just recently watched in World War Z. Enjoy reading it :)

World War Z is a 2013 British-American apocalyptic film directed by Marc Forster. The screenplay by Matthew Michael Carnahan is based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Max Brooks. The film stars Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator who must travel the world to find a way to stop a zombie outbreak.

I’m not an expert on horror movies, but I know when my heart rate is killing me. “World War Z” explodes right after the opening scenes, in which we see warnings that things are going crazy. From the beginning until the end of the movie was great. Great story plot and definitely great graphics.

“World War Z” is the most gratifying action spectacle in years, and one reason for its success is that Pitt doesn’t play a superhero. Gerry Lane is tough and infinitely resourceful but he doesn’t fly, he doesn’t pass through walls, and, in the long tradition of unpretentious movie heroes, he’s reluctant and terse. Early in the film, the Under-Secretary-General of the U.N. (Fana Mokoena), who seems to be one of the most powerful men left alive, tells Gerry that entire cities have fallen to the creatures, and he is the only one who can save the planet. So Gerry sets off in search of the first victim in order to find the cause of the outbreak and then a cure. As he flies around the world, the audience is pulled slowly by the horror.

I would recommend this movie to all movie watchers. The heart-pumping action will amaze you. I can guarantee you guys that this movie is worth your time. Thanks for reading..
